Falling
Chapter One ~ The Tumble
There are many different ways to tumble, you can tumble physically, emotionally, head over heels…the tumble in this story, though, was a physical one and it hurt quite a bit.
Fritz was forced into a sack that blocked out all the sun and resisted all his attempts to break it. He pounded and kicked until his eyes slowly closed and his body ignored his feeble attempts to stay awake. The two guardsmen pushed his seven year old body into the sea from the battlements 200 feet above it.
Fritz’s body was washed up on a shore pounded and battered by the waves into a little cove, out of the cool night air. Still not really awake he coughed up the water he had swallowed and awoke in what seemed to a million years later on a bed of seaweed. Seeing the strange vision of a lady in the back of his mind, he looked around. The cave was fairly large and reached far back into darkness. Fritz couldn’t remember how he has gotten here but decided to look around. He went outside and saw the ocean in all directions. He was on a sandy beach strewn with seaweed and loud for the screech of the seagulls flying overhead. He started walking down the beach, and in a little while he came upon a picnic basket with a young couple sitting and eating out of a basket. When they first saw him walking towards them they weren’t alarmed but as he came closer the woman gasped and ran up to him. The man followed at a more stately trot. The woman said;
“Do you need any help? Are you all right? What are you doing here all alone? Who are—“
The boy cut her off, “I do not remember anything that happened before I woke up in a cave along that way…” and so he proceeded to tell her of the bed of seaweed and how he remembered a woman.
The couple was newly married with a child of their own but they took the boy in for a time and called him Daniel.
The next week, the couple, whom Daniel had learned to call Meagan and Paul, took Daniel into town to see if anyone knew who he was.
No one did, there were always things thrown upon the beach that Daniel was found on. It seemed anything that was lost at sea ended up landing somewhere on the shores of the Charter Peninsula.
Chapter 2 ~ Dreaming
Daniel woke up the next morning from the strangest dream. He was standing on a rocking wooden deck that swayed softly beneath him as he gazed longingly into the water. He couldn’t remember what he was looking for but he had the strangest urge to dive into the waves. Daniel had had this dream for as long as he was living with Meagan and Paul. He remembered nothing of his life before the cave in Charter bay.
He was happy in the little town of Snowden, since they could not find Daniel’s parents or any relatives they decided to keep him until he was of age and find his fortune.
Meagan and Paul had only one child, a boy named Sid, who made Daniel’s life a living hell…
